International recognition for Lankan women surfers

A special event to mark presentation of International Surfing Association Surf Instructor and Ocean Safety Certificates to women’s surfers and a demonstration by them on the skills they have learnt during this project was held at Arugambay beach and New Tri Star Hall, Arugambay recently. This was an initiation by the Skills for Inclusive Growth programme (S4IG) and supported by Australian aid.

Pottuvil Predeshya Sabha Chairmn A Abdul Raheem was the chief guest while the International Surf Association Trainer Coach Patric Reneud graced the occasion as the special guest. Marina Umesh, Regional Manager S4IG and President of the Tourist Association were also present.

Abdul Raheem addressing the event said that this is a historic event as this is the first batch of women’s fully qualified Surf Instructors in Sri Lanka. Through this project, S4IG supported the ladies to receive International Surf Association training especially Surf level 1 and ISA International Lifesaving special Ocean safety training and programme with the membership of Surf lifesaving GB. He also added that Surfing is now becoming a recognized sport with so many health benefits and young girls have shown a great interest in surfing.

Trainer Coach Patric Reneud in his address said Surfing for women will open up economic opportunities to those who have pursued a career path in surfing and lifesaving by gaining internationally recognized qualifications endorsed by the International Surfing Association who are recognized by the Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for surfing.

Marina Umesh Regional Manger said as a part of this programme, an event “community building plus” was organized on the same day with the participation of families, community, friends, tourism business representatives, tour Guide association representatives, travel operators, and tourists to make them aware of this achievement by the ladies and to keep alive business in Arugambay.

Predeshya Sabha Chairmn Abdul Raheem and Surf Association Trainer Coach Patric Reneud presented the certificates to the women surfers who have successfully completed the course.
